Okay. Sailboat. I wanted to say probably half the year just sailing around. This is the second time I've had somebody on that does this. And I just find it amazing that, you know, a lot of people will go in RV and travel the country. But to do it in a boat, especially a sailboat, to me is

So anyway, I am new to this, not new to Harper County, but I moved recently and in my travels back and forth, in and out of my condo, I, you know, crossed paths with Shane and Sandra, and we kind of got on a conversation with them about what what they're do. I got on the conversation about what they're doing, and they told me about their experience with with sailing. And I thought it was so intriguing. And I kind of said, Oh, this is Harford County Living, but you guys are going rogue. And I think that people should hear about this because you're you're living your dream. I'm guessing you wouldn't be doing it if you weren't. And how long have you been doing this? And exactly like I just tell our listeners, like, you know, what started this for you?

You want to Go ahead. Are you okay? Well, I've been sailing since I was 14 and since before I could drive a car. And I've had seven sailboats since I was 21. This is my last, though. This is my seventh. I'm not saying my last. She's saying it's my last. 

And so Sandra and I were were married 25 years ago. And of course, you know, one of the prerequisites and my checklist was you have to like books. So. So and I knew nothing and she knew nothing. Thankfully, she acquiesced. And she likes both.

So we hung around boats for a long time. We found 10 to 15 years ago it was a dilapidated, derelict boat down in Annapolis. And I rehabbed it, brought it back to life. And so we have worked hard on it. And we said, at some point, we're going to just go and do the dream, because my dream was to live in the Bahamas. And that was the goal. I did that. I did the Virgin Islands back in my thirties and took a sailboat down there and loved it. But work got in the way. I have to make money to to drive this life. And so this is our third attempt. I say third attempt. Our first trip was successful and our second trip, the Sandra broke her shoulder three days out in the Solomons Island and she had.

It was nothing dangerous. We were at anchor. It was a calm night. It was Halloween. And she boy, you can tell the rest of the story fell off the bed.

So this is year three. So this is the third attempt. What happened the first time? The first.

First time was great. We got down to Florida and I was still president and CEO of a medical manufacturing storage company and my board of directors reneged as we were coming halfway down, they said, Oh, we don't like the fact that you're making us so much money, but all the other employees can't do what you do. And I said, That's why I'm the president and we'll talk about this in six more months. And we came back in six months. And it's it weighed heavily on my on my shoulders about it. So I ended up we stayed in Saint Augustine, and because of COVID, it was a it was a blessing in disguise that we didn't go to Bahamas because things were still pretty shoot up down there with paperwork. And so we said, okay, number three, we're going down the ICW again. We're going to do this differently. And now I don't work for the company. I own my own companies now developing other products. And so we're in a different situation. So number three is this one. And we'll be in Florida in about a week and a half. We're in Carolina Beach right now on the island, and we'll be in Myrtle Beach on Monday and Tuesday. And then we'll continue on down through Georgia and Florida by the following week. So we'll be in Florida by December. Then we are doing it in little stages, making sure all of our safety systems work and everything's checking out. Then we will we will get our cruising permit for Bahamas, which is incredibly cheap. 600 bucks for a year. And

we just yep, we wait for a weather window from probably go down to Fort Lauderdale and go across the Gulf Stream or we will go down to the Keys, visit some friends and sailors down there. We also have a sailing group on Facebook with 1200 people that travel the ICW. There are dozens.

They admit that it's the acronym acronym for intra coastal waterways.

And the Intracoastal Waterway start in on the East Coast, started Norfolk and Mile one mile 1000 is Key West. And then it goes all the way around through the Gulf of Mexico, right up to Chicago. So that's called the loop.

We will will only go as far as Key West and then will we might sneak in the Dry Tortugas. If I can get our insurance company to give us a an underwrite for that. But normally we're covered through Bahamas, Turks and Caicos and Key West. But Dry Tortugas is one of the places that we want to visit. It's 60 miles beyond Key West and 40 miles off Cuba. So we would like to sail there and spend a few days and then and then head back around.

Wow, That's amazing. Like, I can't even imagine it. It's probably a very isolating life as well. I mean, I hope you guys get along.

Yeah. Yeah, that's right. That's right. Um, it it can be. And it's a it's a marriage tester. You certainly, you know, we, we snap at each other. We're human, We're normal. You know, I'm get, I'm getting older. I'm a little harder hearing somedays and she gets tired of repeating herself and you know stuff like this. But at the end of the day, you know, we sit down and have a cocktail at Sundowner and we say, this is the life, you know, and and then bitch at each other all the way through. That's that's fine, you know? But we love it. It is isolating.

Like not being a boat person initially. I mean, even though you may have had interest, are you able to do everything that needs to be done or is Shane the captain?

Then the captain. I tell him what to do. No, I. Yeah, it's. It's since I broke my shoulder, it's a little more of a struggle. You know, with hoisting sail. So I don't have to do all the grunt work anymore, so. And her title is Admiral by the.

42 foot at 13. 13 eight Beam weighs £30,000. It's a ketch rig, two masts, three sails, diesel engine. So it's a it's a beast. And

it's it's and we have we have one safety rule that we both agree on all the time. And, you know, if when it boils right down to complete safety, only one person has final say. And Sandra is good with that. She's really good. I don't have a captain complex. I don't care to be the boss. But when I've been sailing for 50 years, I've been flying airplanes for 25 years. I know that it can be hours of boredom with a few seconds of ultra stress, and those seconds of rest make a big difference. Yeah, and she's experienced that. So when she has to listen to me, she does. Other than that, no.

How difficult is it? I mean, are you guys, you know, sailing with ease or is it like, you know, is it hard work every single day? Like, I can't even imagine what it would be like every day to have to worry about the wind and the weather. And I one of the things that I think that you mentioned, you guys are completely self-sustaining, sustaining, sustainable or however

Yes.

you say that on the boat. What does that mean? Like you have what you don't need to go anywhere for what you need? Or do you have certain time frames where you do dock?

We are fully sustainable. We make all of our own electricity. Through solar panels and through lithium phosphate batteries. We make all of our own water so we produce we can produce 17 gallons an hour of drinking water, which we do every 2 to 3 days.

It's a it's a built in. It's a system that is that I built installed. It's called reverse osmosis. We take seawater and we put it through a series of three filters. And the final filter is called a membrane. We we pressurize it up to £800, and then we get a little drop at a time. But it's so big that it comes out in a in a stream and it takes any type of water. We've had. We've made water everywhere, even in the heart, even the harbor of Baltimore. And there's a video on that, by the way. Sanders. She drank it right out of the harbor. Here.

You said solar power.

Yes. Well, we we have 800 watts of solar panels on board, and they generate roughly 25 amps per hour on a sunny day. And of course, it's not always 100% sunny days. And so we have a diesel engine that can also generate amperage. And we have a generator that can generate amperage. And we use the solar panels as our number one. By tomorrow, it's going to cloudy here for two days. So we ran the generator a little yesterday. Will right will run the engine this afternoon for an hour just to make hot water because the hot all the all the circulation from the engine system goes through the stainless steel hot water tank and that gives us hotter water than we ever need. That lasts for two days. We're completely sustainable for, well, not completely sustainable for food, but we have eight months. We have enough we have over 100 cans of food down here. Yeah, we have every.

So you get lower panels aren't like the ones you see on a roof of a house. They're not that big.

They're not that big. They're smaller and some are flexible. Some are fixed.

And so you're doing that while you're on the boat the whole time.

Well and yes, absolutely so. So when we were when when we were told we had to come back and I laughed at them. And when we came back, I developed a business plan and I said to Sandra, I said, you know, I'm just going to retire. And she kind of looked at me like, Are you crazy? You've drive me nuts. 

So. So I said, Well, let's let's do a simple little thing here. I want to get paid to go sailing. What do I need to do that? Well, if I'm going to have a business, I don't want to warehouse. I don't want employees. I don't want this. I decided what I wanted. And then I created the business after I decided what I wanted. And I went after it. And I spent a year making that plan happen. And so today we have a pretty, pretty robust online business selling roller hurling systems, sailboats, and

they're produced in Brazil. 

So and of course, we we just met a couple of Canadians up in north of Beaufort, and they helped us in. It was a bit windy and we got talking to the guy and next thing I know he buys a 1150 dollar system for me. And then Sandra makes custom towels, little what we call button towels. And the marina bought $40 worth from her. So it's it was kind of like, Oh, this pays for our cocktail tonight, you know.

No. And you know, we're also developing a new system. We just put on our new 3D, the world's first 3D printed roller foiling system for sailboats. We just.

We just installed it yesterday. We've been working. I've been working on this for a year. Did all the engineering and design myself and I have a company that's printing them out for me and going through the trials and tribulations. And so that's why our signal is so good. When we're not using StarLink, we use a another network provider that gives us unlimited tethering. So during through the Intracoastal, we use that. And then when we go to Bahamas, we'll lose our StarLink. With the other night we lost it at 13 miles off shore and they told us you'll lose it at 12. And they they cut us off at 13. And so we had we have to rely on just VHF radios if we needed them or anything.

The Sandra is a little younger than me, but we're the older couple of the sailing groups. There are what we see. I'd say 80% are in their fifties, forties and fifties with kids or dogs sailing and traveling

Most of that stuff is about between North Carolina Beach and Beaufort, North Carolina. There you have Camp Lejeune. Camp Lejeune. You have and you have to sail around. There's a perimeter we saw. This is the most interesting thing the other night. There's yellow markers that are 15 miles out. You cannot go over past those if you go past those. They have they have red flashing beacons that are not on the chart. And there's a reason they're not on the chart because that's the munitions area and.

Well, I was bringing a friend's boat back last April from Marsh Harbour in the Abaco, and I helped him bring his boat back. And about 3:00 in the morning on my shift, as I was about 150 miles off the coast, a beam of Jacksonville, Florida, I got a radio call and it was a military vessel asking me what my intentions were, and I couldn't see him on the radar. I couldn't see him anywhere. And I answered back. I said, Well, my intentions are to avoid you as much as I can, but I cannot see you. 

And what he did was automatically he he unclothed and he switched. He unclothed the vessel. So then we could see him and see where he was. He said, You're three miles off my port bow. And I went, Oh. And he said, I. So my intentions are to maintain my heading. And he said, okay, sir. He said, We will come around your stern underneath you. And I heard I thought I heard what I said. And I radioed back. I said, Did you say underneath me? And there was silence for a minute. And he came back, I mean, around you. And it was the biggest destroyer I've ever seen. I can't remember the name of it, but it was the one that was in Kuwait that was in the in the first Iraq war that was doing all the shelling and everything else. And these guys were were phenomenal. They came in, they went around behind us, and it was like watching a city on the water move. It was it was very impressive. And the only one I think would ever rattle me. And it will happen eventually will be when we see a submarine. And that's inevitably I want it to be a U.S. submarine. That's all.

So we have upstairs we have a special ocean going for a person, 4 to 6 person life raft. One of those you throw in the water, pull the cord and everything inflates and we have handheld things like a spot X where we can transmit an S.O.S. signal. You also have to think about health. You know, if either of us gets sick on a passage, that's very important. So we have to we have to plan, plan and then plan one more

But for us every week we created a phrase down here, another day, another dolphin. So now it's not unusual. We'll be seeing dolphins from here on south. Every day they come in at the inlets and they fish and they're not there. The little dolphins, a little bow ride. They're more like hungry. They're going to get the fish and jump in front of you and, you know, scare the daylights out of you and then go, We we are in a right whale zone. We have seen we haven't seen right whales, but we know they're out there. And that's always a bit of a a thing that we want to see. One, sharks we'd rather just not.

Well, we don't have any luck with that. I haven't had great success fishing on the boat. I do have I do have a big winding reel and I do plan to get some fishing line when we get into warmer waters and see if we can catch a mahi or Jacques or something. But the problem is that cleaning it, it gets messy. We just don't it we're not set up for cleaning trays and we have freezers out where we can freeze it. But yeah, probably not so much.

And when I and when we talked, you know, just in passing, I was like, this is something that I would love for people to to hear because not everyone has the courage to just say, I'm going to live my life the way I want to do it. And that's why I was more intrigued with what you guys are doing. Yes, the the wholesaling thing is foreign to me and seems like a lot of work, but I love the fact that you've taken your life into your, you know, your and made it something special that, you know, even though your family thinks you're crazy, you know that you're going to do anyway. But quite often we're we're up at three and four in the morning.

For example, anchoring. We have electronics that monitor where we are, and so we have an anchor alarm. And once in a while, the anchor or alarm will decide to go crazy for no reason. So our hours are around the clock and this morning we slept in there. We don't have a real reason to get up till 8:00 and sleep until 8:00, you know. We've got we've got you guys in, and then we're good.

And and, you know, wow, we had five subscribers first, and now we have, I think, 949 as of this morning. So it's just we're just saying, hey, let's see how big this thing gets. We don't

get paid for it. We but here's the nice thing is when you have a YouTube channel and you have that many followers starting now, what happens is we've had this happen to us a few times. And we've had people message us and say, Hey, you're coming into our our area. We'd like to bring you some fresh vegetables and eggs and we have people that and so we've made a lot of friends just by just by being on YouTube and being around and so it's nice. And we have people we run into, they say, Oh yeah, we watch your channel all the time. I just got a text from a friend of mine who said, Hey, I saw the YouTube last week, I'm really sorry you had trouble. And yeah, so it is kind of nice.

Yeah, we have two refrigeration systems and we have an induction. We use induction cooktop. We got rid of propane down below. We didn't want that on board. We have a propane grill on the rail so we can grill any time we want. Now it's kind of funny. Oh yeah, I feel like grilling, but we don't have any meat. Okay. So we'll just. What? Ever grilled. And, you know. Yes, we have. We have. We have. 

But, you know, it's we still have stuff in the. 

Yeah. Well I think yeah, that's, that's kind of how you do it, right. Just get creative. A lot of like, you know, we make a lot of vegan meals, vegetarian meals. So and it's, it's just for a variety and the, all that has, that has caused us to eat basically 14 times a week as well. Only twice a day or once a day. Once a day. Once a day. Yeah. We don't eat, so we don't eat as much now.

We have a hydro vane which uses wind, but we weren't sailing. So I would have been really hard pressed to, you know, I would have done it anyway. I would have gone heave to and come down, but I wouldn't know she was in trouble. I couldn't hear anything down there with the engines running. So.
