Wendy came to me. Oh, God. I want to say months ago. And said, Rich, I met this couple, and you have to have them on the podcast. I'm like, Oh, God, another one? No, I did not see that. Hey, if Wendy tells me that she that I should have somebody on the podcast, of course I listen, because I don't think she has ever recommended a bad guest, with the exception of maybe herself. Not joking. So? So she told me about this couple, this young couple that actually they live on a sailboat, Right?
Wendy Beck 0:37
Yeah.
Rich Bennett 0:39
Okay. Sailboat. I wanted to say probably half the year just sailing around. This is the second time I've had somebody on that does this. And I just find it amazing that, you know, a lot of people will go in RV and travel the country. But to do it in a boat, especially a sailboat, to me is
how can I explain it?
Wendy Beck 1:06
The road less traveled.
Rich Bennett 1:09
Well, it's to me it's like very, I would say, relaxing, like meditative. Is that a word? What is a word? I just said it meditative. So, yeah, it works.
Wendy Beck 1:18
Imagine it's a lot of work to.
Rich Bennett 1:20
So we have Shane and Sandra Mummery on and they are on. Make sure I pronounce it right. Kyan to
Shane & Sandra Mummery 1:29
Yes.
Rich Bennett 1:30
right.
Shane & Sandra Mummery 1:30
You got it right.
Rich Bennett 1:32
Okay. I got her. Oh, right, man. So and I'm going to let Wendy take the lead on this one. Why don't. He's been taking the lead I feel like she's trying to take over the show.
Wendy Beck 1:44
No. You know, I've been co-hosting for a while because we have I mean, I have a nonprofit organization and we do some segments for the for the word on Rich's show. And I also co-host for other, you know, other shows as well. I'm sorry. I have a dog and.
Shane & Sandra Mummery 2:07
I know that voice.
Wendy Beck 2:11
Apologize. So anyway, I am new to this, not new to Harper County, but I moved recently and in my travels back and forth, in and out of my condo, I, you know, crossed paths with Shane and Sandra, and we kind of got on a conversation with them about what what they're do. I got on the conversation about what they're doing, and they told me about their experience with with sailing. And I thought it was so intriguing. And I kind of said, Oh, this is Harford County Living, but you guys are going rogue. And I think that people should hear about this because you're you're living your dream. I'm guessing you wouldn't be doing it if you weren't. And how long have you been doing this? And exactly like I just tell our listeners, like, you know, what started this for you?
Shane & Sandra Mummery 3:04
You want to Go ahead. Are you okay? Well, I've been sailing since I was 14 and since before I could drive a car. And I've had seven sailboats since I was 21. This is my last, though. This is my seventh. I'm not saying my last. She's saying it's my last.
And so Sandra and I were were married 25 years ago. And of course, you know, one of the prerequisites and my checklist was you have to like books. So. So and I knew nothing and she knew nothing. Thankfully, she acquiesced. And she likes both.
Rich Bennett 3:48
Wow.
Shane & Sandra Mummery 3:49
So we hung around boats for a long time. We found 10 to 15 years ago it was a dilapidated, derelict boat down in Annapolis. And I rehabbed it, brought it back to life. And so we have worked hard on it. And we said, at some point, we're going to just go and do the dream, because my dream was to live in the Bahamas. And that was the goal. I did that. I did the Virgin Islands back in my thirties and took a sailboat down there and loved it. But work got in the way. I have to make money to to drive this life. And so this is our third attempt. I say third attempt. Our first trip was successful and our second trip, the Sandra broke her shoulder three days out in the Solomons Island and she had.
Rich Bennett 4:43
Oh.
Shane & Sandra Mummery 4:44
It was nothing dangerous. We were at anchor. It was a calm night. It was Halloween. And she boy, you can tell the rest of the story fell off the bed.
I.
Rich Bennett 4:57
Where you fell off white.
Shane & Sandra Mummery 4:59
The big.
Rich Bennett 5:03
How high is the bed? Off the floor.
Shane & Sandra Mummery 5:06
It's a good three feet. It's about 32 inches from the combing of the edge.
Rich Bennett 5:11
Okay. Ooh.
Shane & Sandra Mummery 5:12
I slipped.
Rich Bennett 5:13
Fell on your shoulder and broke it.
Shane & Sandra Mummery 5:15
Yes. All this is is stainless steel now worth more than the boat?
Wendy Beck 5:23
Wow.
Rich Bennett 5:24
Wow.
Wendy Beck 5:25
So this is year three. So this is the third attempt. What happened the first time? The first.
Shane & Sandra Mummery 5:32
First time was great. We got down to Florida and I was still president and CEO of a medical manufacturing storage company and my board of directors reneged as we were coming halfway down, they said, Oh, we don't like the fact that you're making us so much money, but all the other employees can't do what you do. And I said, That's why I'm the president and we'll talk about this in six more months. And we came back in six months. And it's it weighed heavily on my on my shoulders about it. So I ended up we stayed in Saint Augustine, and because of COVID, it was a it was a blessing in disguise that we didn't go to Bahamas because things were still pretty shoot up down there with paperwork. And so we said, okay, number three, we're going down the ICW again. We're going to do this differently. And now I don't work for the company. I own my own companies now developing other products. And so we're in a different situation. So number three is this one. And we'll be in Florida in about a week and a half. We're in Carolina Beach right now on the island, and we'll be in Myrtle Beach on Monday and Tuesday. And then we'll continue on down through Georgia and Florida by the following week. So we'll be in Florida by December. Then we are doing it in little stages, making sure all of our safety systems work and everything's checking out. Then we will we will get our cruising permit for Bahamas, which is incredibly cheap. 600 bucks for a year. And
Rich Bennett 7:07
Really?
Shane & Sandra Mummery 7:07
we just yep, we wait for a weather window from probably go down to Fort Lauderdale and go across the Gulf Stream or we will go down to the Keys, visit some friends and sailors down there. We also have a sailing group on Facebook with 1200 people that travel the ICW. There are dozens.
Wendy Beck 7:27
What can I. Can I ask? What is the ICW? Just. I mean, I'm not sure what that.
Rich Bennett 7:33
Intercoastal water.
Shane & Sandra Mummery 7:34
They admit that it's the acronym acronym for intra coastal waterways.
Wendy Beck 7:40
Okay.
Shane & Sandra Mummery 7:42
And the Intracoastal Waterway start in on the East Coast, started Norfolk and Mile one mile 1000 is Key West. And then it goes all the way around through the Gulf of Mexico, right up to Chicago. So that's called the loop.
Wendy Beck 7:58
Is that? Is that.
Shane & Sandra Mummery 7:59
You'll hear.
Wendy Beck 8:00
Your going is how far will you go in the loop?
Shane & Sandra Mummery 8:04
We will will only go as far as Key West and then will we might sneak in the Dry Tortugas. If I can get our insurance company to give us a an underwrite for that. But normally we're covered through Bahamas, Turks and Caicos and Key West. But Dry Tortugas is one of the places that we want to visit. It's 60 miles beyond Key West and 40 miles off Cuba. So we would like to sail there and spend a few days and then and then head back around.
Wendy Beck 8:36
Wow, That's amazing. Like, I can't even imagine it. It's probably a very isolating life as well. I mean, I hope you guys get along.
Rich Bennett 8:49
As long as he doesn't push you out of bed any more.
Shane & Sandra Mummery 8:52
Yeah. Yeah, that's right. That's right. Um, it it can be. And it's a it's a marriage tester. You certainly, you know, we, we snap at each other. We're human, We're normal. You know, I'm get, I'm getting older. I'm a little harder hearing somedays and she gets tired of repeating herself and you know stuff like this. But at the end of the day, you know, we sit down and have a cocktail at Sundowner and we say, this is the life, you know, and and then bitch at each other all the way through. That's that's fine, you know? But we love it. It is isolating.
Rich Bennett 9:25
Sandra.
Shane & Sandra Mummery 9:29
What's.
Rich Bennett 9:29
Sandra, be honest. Is it be honest? Is he actually getting hard of hearing or is it selective hearing?
Shane & Sandra Mummery 9:35
Now he's hard of hearing well.
Rich Bennett 9:37
Okay.
Shane & Sandra Mummery 9:38
Yeah, he says when I
Rich Bennett 9:40
The
Shane & Sandra Mummery 9:40
talk.
Rich Bennett 9:40
combination.
Shane & Sandra Mummery 9:42
So, so rich. I see. I see a gospel coming my way. And. And thanks for pushing me under.
Rich Bennett 9:55
Oh, God.
Wendy Beck 9:57
Well, this.
Rich Bennett 9:57
Well, that's I've been told I have selective hearing. It's.
Wendy Beck 10:03
Well, this.
Shane & Sandra Mummery 10:04
Let's.
Wendy Beck 10:05
Isn't a podcast about marriage, but I think that we could definitely.
Rich Bennett 10:10
Be
Wendy Beck 10:10
Spin it in that way because you guys are, you know, you're you're together for 6 to 7 months.
Rich Bennett 10:16
five.
Wendy Beck 10:16
Yeah. Well, 6 to 7 months without being able to, like, you know, run out to the store and everything. Everything is as a group effort. And I, I want to ask Sandra. Like not being a boat person initially. I mean, even though you may have had interest, are you able to do everything that needs to be done or is Shane the captain?
Shane & Sandra Mummery 10:41
I'm.
Then the captain. I tell him what to do. No, I. Yeah, it's. It's since I broke my shoulder, it's a little more of a struggle. You know, with hoisting sail. So I don't have to do all the grunt work anymore, so. And her title is Admiral by the.
Wendy Beck 11:04
And what is yours as yours, Captain.
Shane & Sandra Mummery 11:07
I'm just. Captain. Yeah. Yeah.
Rich Bennett 11:10
Actually. Do you guys have a crew or is it just you to.
Shane & Sandra Mummery 11:13
Just us.
Rich Bennett 11:14
And how big is the boat?
Shane & Sandra Mummery 11:16
42 foot at 13. 13 eight Beam weighs £30,000. It's a ketch rig, two masts, three sails, diesel engine. So it's a it's a beast. And
Rich Bennett 11:30
Yeah.
Shane & Sandra Mummery 11:30
it's it's and we have we have one safety rule that we both agree on all the time. And, you know, if when it boils right down to complete safety, only one person has final say. And Sandra is good with that. She's really good. I don't have a captain complex. I don't care to be the boss. But when I've been sailing for 50 years, I've been flying airplanes for 25 years. I know that it can be hours of boredom with a few seconds of ultra stress, and those seconds of rest make a big difference. Yeah, and she's experienced that. So when she has to listen to me, she does. Other than that, no.
Wendy Beck 12:14
Okay. I'm sorry, Rich. Go ahead.
Rich Bennett 12:16
No, go ahead. When?
Wendy Beck 12:16
How difficult is it? I mean, are you guys, you know, sailing with ease or is it like, you know, is it hard work every single day? Like, I can't even imagine what it would be like every day to have to worry about the wind and the weather. And I one of the things that I think that you mentioned, you guys are completely self-sustaining, sustaining, sustainable or however
Shane & Sandra Mummery 12:41
Yes.
Wendy Beck 12:41
you say that on the boat. What does that mean? Like you have what you don't need to go anywhere for what you need? Or do you have certain time frames where you do dock?
Shane & Sandra Mummery 12:55
We are fully sustainable. We make all of our own electricity. Through solar panels and through lithium phosphate batteries. We make all of our own water so we produce we can produce 17 gallons an hour of drinking water, which we do every 2 to 3 days.
Wendy Beck 13:15
How do you do that?
Shane & Sandra Mummery 13:16
Replenish the.
Wendy Beck 13:17
How do you do that?
Shane & Sandra Mummery 13:18
It's a it's a built in. It's a system that is that I built installed. It's called reverse osmosis. We take seawater and we put it through a series of three filters. And the final filter is called a membrane. We we pressurize it up to £800, and then we get a little drop at a time. But it's so big that it comes out in a in a stream and it takes any type of water. We've had. We've made water everywhere, even in the heart, even the harbor of Baltimore. And there's a video on that, by the way. Sanders. She drank it right out of the harbor. Here.
Rich Bennett 14:01
You said solar power.
Shane & Sandra Mummery 14:03
Yes. Well, we we have 800 watts of solar panels on board, and they generate roughly 25 amps per hour on a sunny day. And of course, it's not always 100% sunny days. And so we have a diesel engine that can also generate amperage. And we have a generator that can generate amperage. And we use the solar panels as our number one. By tomorrow, it's going to cloudy here for two days. So we ran the generator a little yesterday. Will right will run the engine this afternoon for an hour just to make hot water because the hot all the all the circulation from the engine system goes through the stainless steel hot water tank and that gives us hotter water than we ever need. That lasts for two days. We're completely sustainable for, well, not completely sustainable for food, but we have eight months. We have enough we have over 100 cans of food down here. Yeah, we have every.
Rich Bennett 15:05
So you get lower panels aren't like the ones you see on a roof of a house. They're not that big.
Shane & Sandra Mummery 15:12
They're not that big. They're smaller and some are flexible. Some are fixed.
Rich Bennett 15:16
Okay. Okay.
Shane & Sandra Mummery 15:19
We try to find it in an elegant.
Rich Bennett 15:23
You say you run your business. You have a business that you're still running, right?
Shane & Sandra Mummery 15:27
That is correct. Yeah.
Rich Bennett 15:29
And so you're doing that while you're on the boat the whole time.
Shane & Sandra Mummery 15:34
Well and yes, absolutely so. So when we were when when we were told we had to come back and I laughed at them. And when we came back, I developed a business plan and I said to Sandra, I said, you know, I'm just going to retire. And she kind of looked at me like, Are you crazy? You've drive me nuts.
So. So I said, Well, let's let's do a simple little thing here. I want to get paid to go sailing. What do I need to do that? Well, if I'm going to have a business, I don't want to warehouse. I don't want employees. I don't want this. I decided what I wanted. And then I created the business after I decided what I wanted. And I went after it. And I spent a year making that plan happen. And so today we have a pretty, pretty robust online business selling roller hurling systems, sailboats, and
Wendy Beck 16:22
Well, nice.
Shane & Sandra Mummery 16:22
they're produced in Brazil.
So and of course, we we just met a couple of Canadians up in north of Beaufort, and they helped us in. It was a bit windy and we got talking to the guy and next thing I know he buys a 1150 dollar system for me. And then Sandra makes custom towels, little what we call button towels. And the marina bought $40 worth from her. So it's it was kind of like, Oh, this pays for our cocktail tonight, you know.
Rich Bennett 16:54
Well, there's something important to tell everybody the website for that.
Shane & Sandra Mummery 16:59
It's called a lotto furler ala deo furler dot com. So aila audio if you are lr dot com.
And.
Rich Bennett 17:12
Go ahead.
Shane & Sandra Mummery 17:13
No. And you know, we're also developing a new system. We just put on our new 3D, the world's first 3D printed roller foiling system for sailboats. We just.
Rich Bennett 17:23
Really?
Shane & Sandra Mummery 17:24
We just installed it yesterday. We've been working. I've been working on this for a year. Did all the engineering and design myself and I have a company that's printing them out for me and going through the trials and tribulations. So that's kind of our our other life is to say, Yeah, let's prototype the system. And then when we prototype it and works and then come back, then we'll put it on the market.
Wendy Beck 17:47
Okay, so you're setting the example for the business that you have. You are you're kind of like living, you know, the product in real time. That's pretty cool. Yeah. Okay. That's one way to do it. I mean, you have to have some kind of workshop about how to live your dream, and I'll join you. I'd like to hear that later. I'd like to sail around and, you know, do whatever.
Rich Bennett 18:11
And for those of you listening, they are on the boat now while we're recording this. So we are recording virtually. They're on the boat and I have a funny feeling. I know how you guys are connecting, but I just want to be sure because you're actually out in the water now, right? Are you in the marina?
Shane & Sandra Mummery 18:30
No, we're out in the water. We're tied up to a mooring ball. Instead of anchoring, we pay that 30 bucks a night because we've got some high winds coming in. And we just wanted to take a mental break from anchors.
Rich Bennett 18:40
Right. So how are you guys connecting? Are you actually using StarLink?
Shane & Sandra Mummery 18:46
We have start. Yes, we use StarLink. We have. And of course, we have an inverter. We have all we have 120 volt, 12 volt. We have everything on board. And so we use StarLink. And so that's why our signal is so good. When we're not using StarLink, we use a another network provider that gives us unlimited tethering. So during through the Intracoastal, we use that. And then when we go to Bahamas, we'll lose our StarLink. With the other night we lost it at 13 miles off shore and they told us you'll lose it at 12. And they they cut us off at 13. And so we had we have to rely on just VHF radios if we needed them or anything.
Rich Bennett 19:29
Old.
Shane & Sandra Mummery 19:29
But that will happen when you cross over.
Wendy Beck 19:31
Wow.
Shane & Sandra Mummery 19:32
Yeah. Yeah.
Wendy Beck 19:33
I mean, what is it like? What's a normal day? Like, you wake up. What is what is your day look like? I mean, I imagine
90% of your day is work. Not just work like a business, but work on the boat. Like, is there tour? Is there a lot of chores? Like, how does it how do you you spend your day.
Shane & Sandra Mummery 19:56
We while we plan, we plan the night before what we're going to do and we're early risers, so we're usually anchors, usually up by 7 a.m. and then because we're in the Intercoastal right now, we're not doing a lot of sailing because it's some places are very narrow. So it's mainly moored and not a lot of wind either. So it's a lot of motoring. So and then we we like to get up early and get somewhere early so we can sit and relax.
Wendy Beck 20:28
You want.
Shane & Sandra Mummery 20:29
We go to.
Wendy Beck 20:30
Is there maintenance that you have to do daily or like, you know, bringing the sails up and down and cleaning out? You know, I don't know, bathroom staff or how does that work? I mean, I don't know.
Shane & Sandra Mummery 20:44
There's bathroom stuff.
Wendy Beck 20:45
Yeah.
Shane & Sandra Mummery 20:46
Yeah, we designed. We designed a bathroom. Not many sailors want to talk about that topic, so I'll just cover it.
Wendy Beck 20:57
That.
Shane & Sandra Mummery 20:58
There's a YouTube video on that, too. What we designed was a a not a composting toilet, but basically a box toilet. And it it allows you the ability to not have to worry about sanitation, pump outs and things like that. So we
Rich Bennett 21:16
Really?
Shane & Sandra Mummery 21:17
have a it's basically a bucket with with a half diverter system on it that goes into what looks like a wine bag with a quick disconnect fitting so it's very simple. And we maintain that, as Sandra said, every night we do a three day weather projection to see what's coming our way. That's one of the reasons we're here, because in to tomorrow and Friday, Saturday, we're going to get some 30 knot winds, just like you're going to get snowstorm up up your neck of the woods probably. And.
Yeah. Western Maryland is going to.
Wendy Beck 21:53
Okay.
Shane & Sandra Mummery 21:53
12 inches.
Rich Bennett 21:54
Oh.
Wendy Beck 21:56
I do. The weather is supposed to get a little cooler. I mean, it's unseasonably warm here still. You know, it's been. Yeah. It's, it's not been called at.
Shane & Sandra Mummery 22:05
I to say this? You can edit this out. But Wendy, thanks to you, I can check my thermostat in my in my condo. And thanks for all the heat you're sending upstairs because I.
Wendy Beck 22:15
Oh, yeah, we don't. We don't. We don't like to be cold.
Shane & Sandra Mummery 22:21
No, we've
Rich Bennett 22:21
I'm
Shane & Sandra Mummery 22:21
noticed.
Rich Bennett 22:21
afraid it.
Shane & Sandra Mummery 22:23
Yeah. Alexis tells us. Oh, it's nice and warm in there.
Wendy Beck 22:26
I mean, honestly, like, I don't even think it's like 68 in here.
Rich Bennett 22:33
Where do you set your thermostat
Wendy Beck 22:35
Well,
Rich Bennett 22:35
at?
Wendy Beck 22:35
my thermostat is so old that I really don't know. Because it was the original furnace in here. So the the thermostat is like very old. So I'm just kind of like, you know, I'm hot, Oh, I'm cold and just move it back and forth, but.
Now. I know.
Shane & Sandra Mummery 22:59
But our.
Wendy Beck 23:00
Nice and warm.
Shane & Sandra Mummery 23:02
Well, we set our thermostat to 55 zero, so that makes sure that nothing will freeze, the pipes won't freeze, and we check it on on online all the time just to make sure that nothing goes wrong. We would get an alert if there was something wrong.
Wendy Beck 23:18
Yes.
Shane & Sandra Mummery 23:19
So.
Rich Bennett 23:19
So that also tell you say, would that also tell you how the temperature in the condo.
Shane & Sandra Mummery 23:26
Yes. Yes. It tells.
Rich Bennett 23:28
What is it normally when you guys are?
Shane & Sandra Mummery 23:32
Well, we would normally keep it at at 70 degrees, 72, 70, 72. And so yeah, we can see what the outside air temp is a 10th in the condo. We can tell the humidity levels. So we have we have all of that thanks to being in touch online. That's just a fancy.
Wendy Beck 23:51
Yeah.
Shane & Sandra Mummery 23:52
I wondered this 30 years ago.
Wendy Beck 23:55
You wouldn't you wouldn't have been able to, honestly. But I
Shane & Sandra Mummery 23:58
Right.
Wendy Beck 23:58
think. Well, you guys are. You're sound like you're pioneers. You're doing something. And as you're going, you are actually creating better versions of what exists, which I think is really cool. So you know that that in itself is very innovative. But I feel like, is that going to catapult what you're doing and entice other people to do it? How how do you.
Shane & Sandra Mummery 24:26
So
Wendy Beck 24:27
You interact
Shane & Sandra Mummery 24:27
good. Good.
Wendy Beck 24:27
with people that are doing what you do.
Shane & Sandra Mummery 24:31
It's a great question. And so on. Life on the Intracoastal is you meet people all the time. We met, we've already met some fantastic people up in Norfolk and you keep those relationships going and and you also meet them 50 miles down the road the next week. So you're constantly playing hopscotch up and down. Well, our our brand, I think if we call ourselves a brand, our brand is that I'll be 70 next May. The Sandra is a little younger than me, but we're the older couple of the sailing groups. There are what we see. I'd say 80% are in their fifties, forties and fifties with kids or dogs sailing and traveling
Rich Bennett 25:14
Oh, wow.
Shane & Sandra Mummery 25:15
and and then we see the young ones which are becoming less and less. You know, the pandemic was interesting because a lot of people just said, hey, and I give the young generation credit for just saying life is more than just working. That's nice, but you do have to work. But the young generation is starting to whittle down a little bit. And then you have, I'd say 10% of people are age that are, you know, 70 going on 70 plus. And we've seen people that are in their eighties that are still doing this.
Rich Bennett 25:51
Yeah.
Shane & Sandra Mummery 25:51
I don't I don't know that I'm doing that at that age, but we're trying to stay healthy enough that we can, you know, object in motion stays in motion.
Wendy Beck 26:01
Right? Yes, I agree with that. Absolutely. So this this is your year three. Do you have like a even though you don't know what you're going to be doing in ten years, do you feel like this is something that you'll want to continue to do for the next five?
Shane & Sandra Mummery 26:18
We have that discretion all the time. And we. And we said, look, if this is boring because this is our we've seen everything going up and down once, Now we're seeing it all over again, going back down, and it's going to start to get tiring. It's going to get boring at some point. But the payoff is in two weeks when we're sitting in 80 degree weather and you're not, we're we're going to feel really good about that. Not that we're going to feel good about our side of it, and we're going to say worth it. And then Bahamas is 5000 square miles. That's going to take us three or four months to explore and really get to know it. At that point, I think we'll either we'll have get home Midas, we'll probably want to get home just like we're taking our time coming down to see everything
Rich Bennett 27:10
Right.
Shane & Sandra Mummery 27:10
because a lot of time last time it was we rush, rush to get down because the further south we went, it got colder and colder and colder. So we were like in a hurry to get down south and it's doing the same thing again. It's going to be its forties tonight. It's going down to 39 tomorrow night yet. So, yeah, we have.
Rich Bennett 27:30
The other. The other good thing is, you you're the captain and of course, enters the admiral, so she can easily say, Captain, we're not going here this year. We're going here. You can sail anywhere you want. With that being said, is there any place in particular that you would love to sail to that you haven't yet?
Shane & Sandra Mummery 27:55
How about, you know? Oh, yeah,
Rich Bennett 27:57
Oh.
Shane & Sandra Mummery 27:58
I got well, I got a couple of them. Trust me, I would definitely. And I did this once before in my thirties. I sailed a boat from Toronto to the Virgin Islands, but I went to first to Fort Lauderdale, over to the Bahamas, and then from the Bahamas. I sailed down to the British Virgin Islands. And I would love to do that trip again, and I would love to even go further into Columbia and places like that.
Wendy Beck 28:24
Sanders.
Shane & Sandra Mummery 28:25
But.
Wendy Beck 28:25
Sanders saying Nope, nope, nope, nope. And why?
Shane & Sandra Mummery 28:29
Well, she's.
Wendy Beck 28:31
Is it because maybe you're homesick? Or is it more dangerous? I mean, have you guys ever experienced pirates? You know, like, I don't know. What is it like out there?
Rich Bennett 28:42
Our.
Shane & Sandra Mummery 28:44
I just want to say we want know how answer to that one. Yeah, I just know I'm good going to the Bahamas. But then again, let me reflect back. When we got married, she didn't want to drive a car. She didn't have a driver's license. And we got her over that. And then she said, I will never go sailing on a boat for more than a day or two. And then I bought Cayenne, too. And then she worked on it for three years and fell in love with it. And so now she's doing 6 to 8 months. So this could be a work in progress here where maybe
Wendy Beck 29:19
Of.
Shane & Sandra Mummery 29:20
a year more than anything is possible. And if it isn't, I'm cool with that, too. You know, you can only do so much in life. The main thing is to be totally happy. And if you're not happy, don't do it.
Wendy Beck 29:32
Right? No,
Shane & Sandra Mummery 29:32
We
Wendy Beck 29:32
I.
Shane & Sandra Mummery 29:33
live with that philosophy now. We're in it now. If we suddenly got unhappy today, we'd have a real problem. So we're not thinking in those terms.
Wendy Beck 29:41
Right.
Shane & Sandra Mummery 29:42
You know, but we're in. We're trying to make the best of it and have a great time. And we love it. We absolutely. When the sailing is manic, you can have really fantastic, great days. But it's not all glamorous. You can have crappy nights like three nights ago where we we had to ride out 6 hours in the dark, you know, thanks to our instruments and and radar and all this stuff. We're fine. But there can be some really down times that you just get. You have to learn to plateau. You avoid the plateaus and the lows and highs and try to try and stay as consistent as you can.
Wendy Beck 30:22
Do you?
Shane & Sandra Mummery 30:22
Sometimes it's.
Wendy Beck 30:23
Do your document and journal your trips. Is that like a thing?
Shane & Sandra Mummery 30:28
Yes, we do.
Wendy Beck 30:29
Okay, That's cool. Yeah, I like that. That's really neat. Well, then maybe you can put it together in some type of book and, you know, be there for those who want to do that in their future that it is possible. I have another question. Do you ever have family or friends meet you along the way, like fly somewhere and join you or anything like that? Have you had any guests?
Shane & Sandra Mummery 30:54
Not yet. Not yet. Family thinks we're crazy, but. Oh, we have. We have a good friend. I have a good friend. He was our best man at our wedding. He's in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He wants to fly down to Bahamas and spend a couple of weeks with us, and he's more than welcome to do that. So I'm sure that's going to going to materialize. But it's funny, when you get living on a boat, you kind of get comfortable with your surroundings. You don't want anybody living with you. It's Sandra. Sandra's like the same. You know, for me, we we have everything. Ah, we have to. Just to give you a layout of our boat. We have two staterooms. We have two toilets, two showers. We have. We're. We're talking to you. Is is the galley salon area that seats eight people. We have.
Rich Bennett 31:44
Wow.
Shane & Sandra Mummery 31:45
Upstairs, we have a center cockpit with a full enclosure. So we're warm whenever we need to be warm. We have a diesel heater that heats us up. So we really have all the room in the world. And if we don't want to see each other for half a day, I go one end and she goes the other and we don't see each other, but we still get into our this is where we put our stuff and this is what we do. And it's not her limiting, but it's pretty close. Sailors by nature are antisocial.
Wendy Beck 32:16
Okay.
Shane & Sandra Mummery 32:17
Each of them are.
Wendy Beck 32:18
I didn't know. I didn't know.
Shane & Sandra Mummery 32:20
There. There are two types of sailors that we've found out there. One, So we'll go into an anchorage all by ourselves now. We have a very good anchoring system, and I like to throw out 150 feet of chain along with my £65 man as anchor. And I'll sleep through anything. Okay? But I got a big swing. I have a 304 hundred foot swing. When the tides change, when the currents change every twice a day or the winds change and we'll get into an anchorage and all we'll do this. This happened to us not too long ago. The next thing we know, some little guy and a little boat's coming, right? And he's anchoring right beside me. And he doesn't know how much chain I have out. And I'm saying to myself, Well, this is silly, because, you know, it's nice that he wants to buddy up with us, but we're going to hit him in the middle of the night if he doesn't move.
Rich Bennett 33:09
Right.
Shane & Sandra Mummery 33:11
It happens a lot. So the other type of sailors are like us where they know enough that they stay out of they stay out of harm's way and just, you know, stay out there. We don't bother anybody. But
Wendy Beck 33:25
Now.
Shane & Sandra Mummery 33:26
you know, those those stress points.
Wendy Beck 33:28
Okay. Now, do you have the opportunity to go into ports and anchor and explore, or are you on the boat? Like 95% of the time.
Shane & Sandra Mummery 33:41
No, no. That's why we're here. And that's why we're doing more exploring on our way down this time than we have. And we went into town yesterday. We have we have our what we call it the dinghy. It's an it's a AB inflatable with an outboard motor. And when we're traveling the ICW, we raise that up on on debits on the back of the back of the boat. So it hangs. And when we stop somewhere, we just lower that, put the outboard on it. And yesterday we went in to Carolina Beach, which by the way, if you come here, everything is closed on Tuesday.
Wendy Beck 34:17
Oh, that's weird, huh? Okay.
Shane & Sandra Mummery 34:19
Yeah.
Wendy Beck 34:20
Carolina beach.
Rich Bennett 34:21
Restocking
Shane & Sandra Mummery 34:21
Everything.
Rich Bennett 34:22
day.
Wendy Beck 34:22
Good to know.
Shane & Sandra Mummery 34:25
And if you go to Belhaven, North Carolina, it's Monday and Tuesday.
Rich Bennett 34:30
Wow.
Actually, do you guys. I mean, Shane, especially now that you got that wet suit, do you do any scuba diving as well?
Shane & Sandra Mummery 34:40
I've done a lot of snorkeling. I haven't done any in the last ten, 15 years. But now that I have the wetsuit. As long as the water is warm enough, even with a wet suit and the fishes aren't don't have big teeth, I'll be happy to.
Rich Bennett 34:58
Well, the reason I ask, especially since you mentioned Carolina Beach. I mean, there's a lot of the old U-boats in everything and even the old pirates. The wreckage along the coast. Have you ever thought about investigating any of that?
Shane & Sandra Mummery 35:14
It would be pretty impossible for us to do that. We need a lot of equipment to do that. But it would be interesting. Most of that stuff is about between North Carolina Beach and Beaufort, North Carolina. There you have Camp Lejeune. Camp Lejeune. You have and you have to sail around. There's a perimeter we saw. This is the most interesting thing the other night. There's yellow markers that are 15 miles out. You cannot go over past those if you go past those. They have they have red flashing beacons that are not on the chart. And there's a reason they're not on the chart because that's the munitions area and.
Rich Bennett 35:53
Yup.
Shane & Sandra Mummery 35:54
And they track you. If they see you go over that red line on the chart. They'll come and get you and they'll warn you off or give you a citation. But what is on the charter, all the wrecks and all the things that are that are charted, you see them all the time and they tell you they're 60 feet below your water level, 50 feet
Rich Bennett 36:13
Yeah.
Shane & Sandra Mummery 36:14
or whatever. And we even avoid those because you just never know.
I would love.
Rich Bennett 36:21
About. I'm sorry. Go ahead.
Shane & Sandra Mummery 36:24
No, no, that's right. Sorry.
Rich Bennett 36:27
I don't even think about, like with Lagoon and other military installations, you know, Of course, you know, but there have been times where something happens and you go off course. Have you has that ever happened to you where all of a sudden you're like, I want to say, military waters, and you're like, oh, better find that bathroom really quick.
Shane & Sandra Mummery 36:52
We we have excellent navigation, Navy Onyx onboard. We have a system called ACE, which is a transponder. We have global satellite. We have three different satellite systems on board for navigation. And it we I always know where we are at any time. You know, it's just good practice, good seamanship.
Rich Bennett 37:15
Yeah. Yeah, because that can be pretty scary when you see all these boats all of a sudden come out and surround you.
Shane & Sandra Mummery 37:22
Well, I was bringing a friend's boat back last April from Marsh Harbour in the Abaco, and I helped him bring his boat back. And about 3:00 in the morning on my shift, as I was about 150 miles off the coast, a beam of Jacksonville, Florida, I got a radio call and it was a military vessel asking me what my intentions were, and I couldn't see him on the radar. I couldn't see him anywhere. And I answered back. I said, Well, my intentions are to avoid you as much as I can, but I cannot see you.
And what he did was automatically he he unclothed and he switched. He unclothed the vessel. So then we could see him and see where he was. He said, You're three miles off my port bow. And I went, Oh. And he said, I. So my intentions are to maintain my heading. And he said, okay, sir. He said, We will come around your stern underneath you. And I heard I thought I heard what I said. And I radioed back. I said, Did you say underneath me? And there was silence for a minute. And he came back, I mean, around you. And it was the biggest destroyer I've ever seen. I can't remember the name of it, but it was the one that was in Kuwait that was in the in the first Iraq war that was doing all the shelling and everything else. And these guys were were phenomenal. They came in, they went around behind us, and it was like watching a city on the water move. It was it was very impressive. And the only one I think would ever rattle me. And it will happen eventually will be when we see a submarine. And that's inevitably I want it to be a U.S. submarine. That's all.
Rich Bennett 39:13
Well, yeah.
Wendy Beck 39:14
I hope so.
Rich Bennett 39:18
Actually with that because you say you're. Did you mention that you're going to be sailing towards Cuba as well?
Shane & Sandra Mummery 39:26
Well, I mean, Key West is only 91 miles from Cuba.
Rich Bennett 39:30
Right.
Shane & Sandra Mummery 39:30
So you're you're going to be at least 40 miles from Cuba if we sail to Dry Tortugas. So you just have to make sure you don't lose your way.
Rich Bennett 39:41
Right, because I.
Shane & Sandra Mummery 39:42
Without.
Rich Bennett 39:43
I know they do. The I always call them war games,
you know, in the waters off of Cuba, where you have other other countries like Russia and or.
Shane & Sandra Mummery 39:56
Yeah.
Rich Bennett 39:57
And that's
Shane & Sandra Mummery 39:57
Yeah.
Rich Bennett 39:57
yeah, I would not want to see that either. That be.
Wendy Beck 40:01
Intense.
Rich Bennett 40:04
It turns.
Shane & Sandra Mummery 40:04
That's.
And that's one of the reasons we have an international identifier number that's good anywhere in the world, and it identifies us to military and other other forces so that, you know, they can say, okay, this is a a customs ridge. This is a Coast Guard registered vessel. It has an MSI number. They know our dis. They know where we are at all times. And we also have to think about safety. So we have upstairs we have a special ocean going for a person, 4 to 6 person life raft. One of those you throw in the water, pull the cord and everything inflates and we have handheld things like a spot X where we can transmit an S.O.S. signal. You also have to think about health. You know, if either of us gets sick on a passage, that's very important. So we have to we have to plan, plan and then plan one more
Wendy Beck 41:04
Yeah,
Shane & Sandra Mummery 41:04
time.
Wendy Beck 41:04
that's a lot. I mean, I guess you don't really think about all of that. You know, I don't. I've never been on a sailboat in any real sense of the word, but I can't even imagine how much preparation it takes. It probably takes the other six months of the year just to prepare for your trip.
Shane & Sandra Mummery 41:23
In some cases, yeah. For the food and the planning, we pull the boat out. And of course, what happened was when Sandra broke her shoulder, which is so sad, we had said, okay, let's get it fixed. We got her into therapy and we got her back to normal and we said, okay, instead of going south, let's go north. We were going to go to Maine for the summer and go up to Maine and Canada and all of that. And then one night I got a text from a friend of mine. Somebody just hit the bridge and we keep our boat inside the Baltimore Harbor Key Bridge, not.
Rich Bennett 41:57
Oh.
Wendy Beck 41:58
Oh,
Shane & Sandra Mummery 41:59
So
Wendy Beck 41:59
so that effect.
Shane & Sandra Mummery 41:59
when the rich go, Oh yeah, that land locked us for three months
Wendy Beck 42:05
Oh,
Shane & Sandra Mummery 42:05
and.
Wendy Beck 42:05
wow. Okay.
Shane & Sandra Mummery 42:06
We. So. So it was a double jeopardy for us. And then we decided in June to haul the boat out and do some upgrades to it. And we launched again in October. Well, this time of year makes me nervous in October. Even now makes me nervous because hurricanes are still around. We just missed we just missed Sarah by this much. And Sarah's coming through right now. The remnants are coming through as we speak. Tomorrow we'll have 35 knot winds and a lot more rain. Or tonight we'll have that. And then tomorrow will be clear. So, yeah. But the thing I was going to say is there's no get there itis. And we have we say we don't do this. We do once in a while and we don't mean to. But if we don't like where we what we see for weather, we're just not going to go anywhere.
Rich Bennett 42:58
Right.
Shane & Sandra Mummery 42:58
Sit. We'll.
Wendy Beck 43:00
Yeah.
Shane & Sandra Mummery 43:00
We'll wait it out, you know. So there are some nights, though, when you have to use your anchor and you know you're going to have 40 knot, 50 knot gusts. And, you know, you just have a lot of faith in your tackle and and hold on for the ride. You know, sometimes it's just a lot of fun.
Wendy Beck 43:19
Well, it sounds extremely interesting. I mean, and, you know, you definitely are living a life that not many people would venture to do. You know, I want to kind of you know, you've talked about like the challenges that you have with the boat and the challenges that you have just navigating. What about like.
Nature. What about, like, sharks and whales and, you know, all of that kind of stuff? I mean, that has to be amazing to be in that situation where you can see stuff like that. Like, is there anything that really jumps out at you? That was something that was mind blowing.
Shane & Sandra Mummery 44:01
The only thing for me is dolphins.
Wendy Beck 44:03
Okay.
Shane & Sandra Mummery 44:03
I knew she was going to say
so on this trip. We saw our first dolphin, first dolphin coming into ten miles south of Annapolis.
Wendy Beck 44:15
Oh, okay.
Shane & Sandra Mummery 44:17
Believe it or not, it.
Rich Bennett 44:17
Your first.
Shane & Sandra Mummery 44:20
On this trip. On this trip.
Rich Bennett 44:23
Okay.
Shane & Sandra Mummery 44:24
Yeah. Dolphins are up in the bay. And where you have dolphins, you have you have sharks. That's just normal.
Rich Bennett 44:30
Right.
Shane & Sandra Mummery 44:31
But for us every week we created a phrase down here, another day, another dolphin. So now it's not unusual. We'll be seeing dolphins from here on south. Every day they come in at the inlets and they fish and they're not there. The little dolphins, a little bow ride. They're more like hungry. They're going to get the fish and jump in front of you and, you know, scare the daylights out of you and then go, We we are in a right whale zone. We have seen we haven't seen right whales, but we know they're out there. And that's always a bit of a a thing that we want to see. One, sharks we'd rather just not.
Wendy Beck 45:11
Yeah, I get. But yeah.
Rich Bennett 45:15
Actually, you guys mentioned you got a lot of canned food on there. Do you ever, you know, fish, crab or whatever off the boat and which catch?
Shane & Sandra Mummery 45:25
Well, we don't have any luck with that. I haven't had great success fishing on the boat. I do have I do have a big winding reel and I do plan to get some fishing line when we get into warmer waters and see if we can catch a mahi or Jacques or something. But the problem is that cleaning it, it gets messy. We just don't it we're not set up for cleaning trays and we have freezers out where we can freeze it. But yeah, probably not so much.
Wendy Beck 45:55
I think it's really cool. And when I and when we talked, you know, just in passing, I was like, this is something that I would love for people to to hear because not everyone has the courage to just say, I'm going to live my life the way I want to do it. And that's why I was more intrigued with what you guys are doing. Yes, the the wholesaling thing is foreign to me and seems like a lot of work, but I love the fact that you've taken your life into your, you know, your and made it something special that, you know, even though your family thinks you're crazy, you know that you're going to do anyway. And I think a lot. What advice do you have for people, you know, that are thinking about, you know, climbing that mountain or, you know, doing what you're doing? Like, tell tell them how to do it. And is it worth it?
Shane & Sandra Mummery 46:49
My thing is, don't wait until you're our age to do it.
That's be my thing. We. We we met when we were, what, a little younger. You were 40 and and 39 and. And I was, what, 44? 43. And we often say to is to ourselves. We wish we'd met each other a lot sooner so that we could be doing this a lot younger. Right.
Wendy Beck 47:16
Right.
Shane & Sandra Mummery 47:16
We're voting this are born in the United Kingdom. And both of us parents separately, they didn't know each other. They emigrated to Canada in 1957 and 1965 65. And so we met back in 1998, but we didn't realize that they were both British citizens, Canadian citizens, and now we're U.S. citizens. And, you know, if we had met each other years ago, we would have been able to get this under our belt. Maybe, maybe, you know, we still have to work.
Wendy Beck 47:49
You wouldn't have the
Shane & Sandra Mummery 47:50
But
Wendy Beck 47:50
exposure.
Shane & Sandra Mummery 47:50
yes.
Wendy Beck 47:51
You have now, you wouldn't have had the.
Shane & Sandra Mummery 47:54
Correct. And.
Wendy Beck 47:55
Yeah. Seems like
Shane & Sandra Mummery 47:57
And
Wendy Beck 47:57
you need.
Shane & Sandra Mummery 47:57
my advice is.
Wendy Beck 47:58
What?
Shane & Sandra Mummery 48:00
You do. And and you need to be in a position that you can't be rushed to do it. My advice to younger people to doing this today, 50% of the younger people that were on YouTube have failed. And the reason they failed is because it was a fad and they couldn't they didn't have the experience and they're just going to go out and hurt themselves. And we meet we meet people like that. Some of them are fantastic.
Rich Bennett 48:25
Yeah.
Shane & Sandra Mummery 48:26
But it's sad that my advice to them is, you know what? Take it in baby steps. You know, take it baby steps. Maybe set a goal when you're 50 years of age to go and do that or 55 or something like that, you know. So that's the only regret I think we'll ever have, is that we didn't we didn't do it sooner.
Rich Bennett 48:47
So I know you guys have the YouTube channel, which is what is the YouTube channel again?
Shane & Sandra Mummery 48:54
Sailing Kyan to K-Y and Roman Numeral two.
Rich Bennett 48:59
Okay. Have you guys thought about actually doing a podcast from the Waters?
Shane & Sandra Mummery 49:06
We we have our I have we have friends that are we have a lot of friends on the way. We have friends that are that are living full time and they're musicians and they do podcasts every week. We just haven't gotten to that point yet that I won't make a video if I don't have anything to talk about. And.
Rich Bennett 49:27
Right. Well.
Shane & Sandra Mummery 49:28
We have a lot of YouTube creators that we know that are just making to me, making videos every week for the sake of making the videos. And I disagree with that.
Rich Bennett 49:36
Video.
Shane & Sandra Mummery 49:36
I.
Rich Bennett 49:37
Yeah.
Wendy Beck 49:38
Right. You want it to be something.
Shane & Sandra Mummery 49:39
So.
Wendy Beck 49:40
You want people to to know or experience with you. And if nothing's going on, I get
Shane & Sandra Mummery 49:45
Right.
Wendy Beck 49:46
that. It's hard. Yeah.
Shane & Sandra Mummery 49:49
But we'll be happy to be your
Rich Bennett 49:50
That's why
Shane & Sandra Mummery 49:51
roving
Rich Bennett 49:51
I don't do video.
Shane & Sandra Mummery 49:52
reporter on the water. Rich
Wendy Beck 49:53
Oh,
Shane & Sandra Mummery 49:53
and.
Wendy Beck 49:54
okay.
Shane & Sandra Mummery 49:55
We'll do it.
Wendy Beck 49:55
Yeah.
Shane & Sandra Mummery 49:57
Shoot you, shoot you a podcast, You can you can say, well, it's it's Christmas. Let's see where Shane and Sandra are. Yeah, we're here in the Bahamas. Here we are. You know, we can do one of those.
Wendy Beck 50:08
I love it. We should definitely do that. Definitely.
Rich Bennett 50:12
Shane. I'm always open for ideas, so you may have just opened up a can of worms there.
Shane & Sandra Mummery 50:18
This is the story of my life. It's your entrepreneurial innovation.
Wendy Beck 50:24
I get it. Yeah. The entrepreneurial brain is a is an animal all in itself. You just keep adding to those, you know, things that you do and just try to perfect it. And I can see that in you. And the other thing is, is like when you say some of the other people or what they're going out and doing this, you guys are perfecting it and you're making it better for the future, which I think is really cool.
Shane & Sandra Mummery 50:51
Well, we thank you. We'd like to think so. Well, sometimes.
Wendy Beck 50:54
Yeah, you are.
Shane & Sandra Mummery 50:55
You're.
Wendy Beck 50:56
Well, you are.
Shane & Sandra Mummery 50:59
If we can if we can inspire somebody to do this, then that's great. But we want them to not hurt themselves because this is this is a can be very serious business. If you don't take the precautions. And but I'd say for the most part, 99% of the people down here know what they're doing. They've they've been they've learned the hard way, as we all have. You know, we we we all make dumb mistakes like last night at that 1:00 in the morning. Did I forget to put the cover on the generator as it's raining? As it's raining? You know, the nice thing is you can hop up on deck, fix it, come back down and go back to bed. You know, that's the life here. There is no there is an alarm clock. But quite often we're we're up at three and four in the morning.
Wendy Beck 51:48
Well.
Shane & Sandra Mummery 51:49
For example, anchoring. We have electronics that monitor where we are, and so we have an anchor alarm. And once in a while, the anchor or alarm will decide to go crazy for no reason. We've we haven't had an anchor drag and such would three years notice that touch would surface station. That's a sailing thing. But, you know, it's stuff like that. So our hours are around the clock and this morning we slept in there. We don't have a real reason to get up till 8:00 and sleep until 8:00, you know. We've got we've got you guys in, and then we're good.
Wendy Beck 52:24
That's right. Well, we appreciate it. This has been amazing. I you know, I hope that maybe we can talk again, you know, and and just hear about your journey and but people want to watch your YouTube video. They can go to sailing. What is it? I'm sorry. Sail, sailing. Type into. And do you have.
Rich Bennett 52:46
Why am.
Wendy Beck 52:47
You have a website? Or is it just the YouTube channel?
Shane & Sandra Mummery 52:51
It's just the YouTube channel. We do have Instagram, but honestly, we just find that focusing on the YouTube. The YouTube channel was started by a suggestion of our neighbor in our marina, and so I started it as really a joke. I didn't really intend to do anything with it. And and, you know, wow, we had five subscribers first, and now we have, I think, 949 as of this morning. So it's just we're just saying, hey, let's see how big this thing gets. We don't
Wendy Beck 53:20
Yeah.
Shane & Sandra Mummery 53:20
get paid for it. We but here's the nice thing is when you have a YouTube channel and you have that many followers starting now, what happens is we've had this happen to us a few times. People follow us and they know where our destination is going to be and we'll say where we're going or they'll follow us on maritime traffic and follow our advice. And we've had people message us and say, Hey, you're coming into our our area. We'd like to bring you some fresh vegetables and eggs and we have people that and so we've made a lot of friends just by just by being on YouTube and being around and so it's nice. And we have people we run into, they say, Oh yeah, we watch your channel all the time. I just got a text from a friend of mine who said, Hey, I saw the YouTube last week, I'm really sorry you had trouble. And yeah, so it is kind of nice.
Wendy Beck 54:15
It's kind of like a diary. It allows you to have a diary and tell your story in real time. And people are interested in that. So, you know, I'm going to I'm going to definitely jump on and watch you guys as well, because I think it's pretty neat.
Shane & Sandra Mummery 54:30
And if we ever decide to give it up, then, then that will be the time we hang up our hats. Then we'll say, okay, what's the next chapter? But I personally don't see us giving up sailing for at least 3 to 5 years. I just don't know that we'll do the ICW trip the third time yet. But we said that the first time. We said it's just a motorboat ride, but let's get let's go and have some fun. Let's go to Dry Tortugas. Let's go to Bahamas. I think Bahamas is going to be a big game changer, you know, maybe.
Wendy Beck 55:01
This will be the first time that you made it to the Bahamas. Is this going to be the first time that you actually made it to the Bahamas?
Shane & Sandra Mummery 55:08
Yeah. Yeah. On this boat? Yeah.
Wendy Beck 55:10
Yeah, well, I don't. I think you should have plenty to look at. I don't. I can't imagine that would get boring right away.
Shane & Sandra Mummery 55:18
And the balance is, you know, we're technically we're both retired, so we also have to balance the budget and.
Wendy Beck 55:26
Yes.
Shane & Sandra Mummery 55:26
So we can't go out in fancy restaurants and everything all the time, but we balance
Wendy Beck 55:31
Yes.
Shane & Sandra Mummery 55:31
the budget and, you know, we cook in the and eat on board a lot more than we go out. And every time we go out for lunch, it's another 60 hour no matter where you go. So it's.
Wendy Beck 55:42
Yeah, that's
Shane & Sandra Mummery 55:43
One
Wendy Beck 55:43
just.
Shane & Sandra Mummery 55:43
of those things.
Wendy Beck 55:44
Yeah, well, that so, you know, what do you what do you cook? I mean, do you get to get your fresh vegetables and stuff like that a lot or is it more, like you said, canned foods and dry goods.
Shane & Sandra Mummery 55:57
The canned food is back up. You have to. I don't have an oven because I refuse to turn on an oven when it's 90 degrees outside.
Wendy Beck 56:06
Mhm.
Shane & Sandra Mummery 56:06
We don't have air conditioning and we don't have
Wendy Beck 56:08
Okay.
Shane & Sandra Mummery 56:08
we don't need it. So I get creative and I did a lot of prepared meals and froze them. So just quick, pull out of the freeze. We go, but we restock every once in a while. We're going to go back into town and get some fresh vegetables. We don't have a huge fridge, so everything is like small amounts. We have. We have. Yeah, we have two refrigeration systems and we have an induction. We use induction cooktop. We got rid of propane down below. We didn't want that on board. We have a propane grill on the rail so we can grill any time we want. Now it's kind of funny. Oh yeah, I feel like grilling, but we don't have any meat. Okay. So we'll just. What? Ever grilled. And, you know. Yes, we have. We have. We have.
But, you know, it's we still have stuff in the.
Yeah. Well I think yeah, that's, that's kind of how you do it, right. Just get creative. A lot of like, you know, we make a lot of vegan meals, vegetarian meals. So and it's, it's just for a variety and the, all that has, that has caused us to eat basically 14 times a week as well. Only twice a day or once a day. Once a day. Once a day. Yeah. We don't eat, so we don't eat as much now.
Wendy Beck 57:32
Right.
Shane & Sandra Mummery 57:33
And that's and that's good. I mean, because of any temptations like, Oh. I want some. I have a couple of bags of chocolate potato chips hidden on board. I've got my chocolate. Yeah, but I can ration myself. Other people.
It was very.
Rich Bennett 57:53
You can always get those. I don't even know what they call them now. Emery's meals ready to eat the freeze dried stuff.
Shane & Sandra Mummery 58:00
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. But you know, there.
Rich Bennett 58:03
Stop by. Kate Bolduan. I'm sure they have some.
Shane & Sandra Mummery 58:07
Yeah.
Rich Bennett 58:10
Just don't drink the water.
Shane & Sandra Mummery 58:14
Well, yeah, that's. We made water at camp last year, and there's an anchorage right beside Camp Lagoon, and we made water in there, and I thought about that, but, you know, I'm normal.
Rich Bennett 58:24
Yeah. I think you're. You're safe now. So.
Shane & Sandra Mummery 58:27
I'm normal. I live on a boat. What can I tell you?
Wendy Beck 58:30
Yeah, right. Well, do you have anything else for them today?
Rich Bennett 58:37
I just I want to thank you both. I learned a lot. A couple of the couple two main things I learned is that, number one, you guys can go away for the winter and don't have to worry about anything because Wendy keeps her heat so high that it's just heating everything above
The other thing I learned is look.
Wendy Beck 59:01
Say, What else did I do?
Shane & Sandra Mummery 59:05
Well, the other. The other bonus.
Rich Bennett 59:07
The.
Shane & Sandra Mummery 59:08
Two extra parking spaces because.
Wendy Beck 59:11
Oh, yeah.
Shane & Sandra Mummery 59:11
They will not let us leave our doors there for more than 90 days or they throw them away. So we had to have our cars shipped.
Wendy Beck 59:17
You couldn't. You could have given me your keys. I could have, like, wrote them around the parking lot for you and parked somewhere else.
Shane & Sandra Mummery 59:25
I thank you so much for that. Here's the thing. I'm not. That's just not me. I wouldn't burden someone else if the car was their.
Wendy Beck 59:32
Would.
Yeah, I know. I understand. I'm just teasing. But yeah, you're right about that too. So you know condo life and has its you know is issues as well but I would love to be able to escape
Shane & Sandra Mummery 59:45
We.
Wendy Beck 59:45
for. Honestly.
Shane & Sandra Mummery 59:49
We've lived in that in Harford County. Now it's going on, what, 23 years, 20, 20, 21 years, 21 years. And we love HARFORD. It's it's a great place to live. It's changing. It's as it should. Everything changes. Everything gets busier. But, you know, we we love it. We thought about maybe moving and moving to North Carolina, but we kind of decided no after that last storm. That storm, yeah, we're not we don't want to live on the island. And since we're on the top floor, we don't think we're going to have a flooding issue. But we love it in Harford County. You know, that's that's our retired place. That's that we'll be there probably forever.
Wendy Beck 1:00:32
Well, let's hope that all the, you know, neighbors in Hartford County and residents come onto your YouTube channel and get inspired and.
Shane & Sandra Mummery 1:00:41
Thank you.
Wendy Beck 1:00:41
See a little bit of what you guys are doing. And if Rich is up for it, I'm going to invite you back. And you know, you can tell us more to come because I'm sure you have story is beyond stories as you travel.
Rich Bennett 1:00:56
Oh, you know, I'm up for. The only thing I am kind of upset. I think you guys need to make a U-turn and come back this way because. I think for December, you guys should be hauling Santa Claus around on the waters.
Wendy Beck 1:01:11
Do
Shane & Sandra Mummery 1:01:12
Oh, Rich.
Wendy Beck 1:01:12
you?
Shane & Sandra Mummery 1:01:13
Oh, it's a lot.
Wendy Beck 1:01:14
Zachary.
Shane & Sandra Mummery 1:01:15
Jump up.
Yeah,
Wendy Beck 1:01:17
Do you
Shane & Sandra Mummery 1:01:18
we.
Wendy Beck 1:01:18
decorate your boat or is that a.
Shane & Sandra Mummery 1:01:21
Yes. Yeah.
Wendy Beck 1:01:22
No.
That's awesome.
Shane & Sandra Mummery 1:01:25
We have lights and green lights all the way up the mast and all the way back down. And I don't think we brought all the lights that we had three years ago. But don't forget, we're heading for Saint Augustine, which is nights of lights for 14 days or 21 days. So.
Rich Bennett 1:01:41
Oh.
Shane & Sandra Mummery 1:01:42
There will be anchored in Saint Augustine for a few days, catch up with some dear friends of ours and and then we'll be heading down. But we'll probably we'll be shooting some footage definitely there. And I hope you guys have got something out of it today with us. We've really appreciated the time as well,
Rich Bennett 1:02:01
I'm sorry. I just got to ask one thing.
The sage asleep on the inside of the bed now close to the wall. And you're on the outside.
Shane & Sandra Mummery 1:02:12
Yeah. Yes, sir. And.
If it's really rough weather, we just wrap her up in bugs and keep her back there.
I'm not kidding you. The other night, it was so rough out there. She wouldn't. She couldn't. She couldn't stay upstairs. I said, no, let me helm this. I stayed up for 6 hours and she came to she said, I'm going to go
Rich Bennett 1:02:36
Wow.
Shane & Sandra Mummery 1:02:36
to. You want to sleep. And she said, okay. And I said, But you're not going in the aft cabin. You stay here where I can keep my eye on you.
Wendy Beck 1:02:46
Where I can see you, Right?
Shane & Sandra Mummery 1:02:49
Can you imagine? You don't really think about it. But when she fell that night, she fell. I was in the V berth getting something. She was in the aft cabin, getting the TV to bring it in here in the main area, and she could not get up. Well, can you imagine a 6 hours that had happened the other night and I couldn't leave the wheel if I had left the helm? We don't have autopilot like a automatic system. We have a hydro vane which uses wind, but we weren't sailing. So I would have been really hard pressed to, you know, I would have done it anyway. I would have gone heave to and come down, but I wouldn't know she was in trouble. I couldn't hear anything down there with the engines running. So.
Wendy Beck 1:03:31
Well.
Shane & Sandra Mummery 1:03:31
But yeah, a lot of people ask that. And yes, I still get a little nervous when when I leave her alone in the cabin and.
Wendy Beck 1:03:41
Yes.
Shane & Sandra Mummery 1:03:43
Excellent. That's all. Yeah. It was just a fuzzy blanket that was. She put her knee where she thought there was a combing and the combing wasn't there. And she went boom, right over. And so I call it the killer line. Yeah.
Wendy Beck 1:03:57
Yeah, right.
Shane & Sandra Mummery 1:03:57
Killer blank.
Wendy Beck 1:03:59
Always a pleasure. And again, we'll we'll talk soon and hopefully we can we can talk when you get back or do another on, you know, on location.
Rich Bennett 1:04:11
Actually that be great when you guys. Yeah. When you guys get back, let's do an in-person one to talk about the voyage and everything.
Shane & Sandra Mummery 1:04:19
Well, and I'll tell you what we may I don't know if we're going to make West Palm in time, if there's anywhere to anchor. My sister is her husband is getting cancer treatment in West Palm right now till the end of November. So we might go down and anchor there. We might go down and anchor in Miami. And I'll tell you, Miami at night,
Rich Bennett 1:04:37
Mm hmm.
Shane & Sandra Mummery 1:04:38
no name harbor, if that Anchorage is a fantastic view. So we might even do something from there during the day and during the evening. They have manatees swimming around and everything. So we'll see if we can take some footage and then and then give you exclusive for the Rich Bennett show. How.
Wendy Beck 1:04:55
Oh, thank you.
Rich Bennett 1:04:58
It's The Wendy Beck Show. She took over.

Meet Shane Mummery - CanvasRebel Magazine
Our Business Models …After many years of sailing in various parts of the coastal USA and Canada, Shane realized that there is a tremendous opportunity for product representation in what is clearly a “transient market” collectively traveling 75,000,000 nautical miles every year, stopping every 20-50 nautical miles for overnights and very often limited in their ability to buy products outside of that “bubble”. Equally as important is that the merchants who serve this market are limited in their exposure to new products to sell.
Our business model is unique in that we conduct business both from our home base near Annapolis, MD in the summer months and sail the Atlantic Intra Coastal Waterways on our 42 Sailing Ketch KYAN II, a liveaboard vessel, from October to May stopping at ports from Baltimore to Florida where we continue to develop a blended network of contacts from Baltimore to Florida which includes dozens of merchants and sailors in many ports and anchorages.
The icwstore.com and aladofurler.com are end user websites where we also market directly; The Shane Agency is also a Manufacturer’s Representative Agency calling on B2B markets and also provides opportunities for c…
