From Coal Mines to Pizzerias: Erica D’Arcangelo’s Story of Family, Tradition, and Pizza

What if a slice of pizza was more than just food? What if it carried the legacy of an entire family?

In this episode of Conversations with Rich Bennett, we dive deep into the remarkable journey of Erica D’Arcangelo, author of A Story About Pizza. Her book captures the inspiring tale of her grandfather, who left the coal mines of Windber, Pennsylvania, to fulfill his dream of opening a family-owned pizzeria that has been a community staple since 1960.

Erica’s story is about more than pizza—it’s about resilience, tradition, and the unbreakable bonds of family.

The Family Legacy Behind A Story About Pizza

Erica’s grandfather was pulled out of school at the age of nine to work in the coal mines. Like many immigrant families, hard labor was the only path to survival. But he dreamed of something more—something he could pass down to future generations.

After years of grueling work in the mines, he and his wife opened a small Italian market, selling homemade tomato sauces, ice cream, and other essentials. When they started selling pizza, everything changed. That small business grew into D’Arc’s Pizza, a beloved family-run pizzeria in Pennsylvania that still thrives today.

Through Erica’s book, she brings that journey to life, weaving in personal stories, family traditions, and even authentic Italian recipes that have been passed down through generations.

Why This Story Matters

We often hear about the American Dream, but few stories illustrate it as beautifully as Erica’s. Her grandfather’s journey from coal dust to pizza dough is a testament to:

  • The resilience of immigrant families
  • The power of perseverance and hard work
  • The importance of keeping traditions alive
  • How food connects generations and communities

Whether you have a passion for food, love a great underdog story, or want a reminder of what’s possible with determination, this episode will inspire you.

The Secret to Authentic Italian Pizza

One of the most intriguing parts of our conversation was the dedication to quality ingredients in her family’s pizzeria. Erica explains why San Marzano tomatoes are the key to a perfect sauce, why her family still hand-rolls their dough every day, and how their recipes remain unchanged since her grandparents first opened the shop.

Food is more than sustenance—it’s history.

What’s Next for Erica D’Arcangelo?

In addition to her book, Erica is launching a children’s book series inspired by A Story About Pizza, teaching young readers about perseverance, cultural heritage, and, of course, delicious food.

She’s also launching a podcast series on family-owned pizzerias, traveling the country to uncover the untold stories behind some of the most beloved pizza shops.
