From Local News to Uplifting the World: A Conversation with Jamie Costello

From Local News to Uplifting the World: A Conversation with Jamie Costello

For 37 years, Jamie Costello was a trusted voice in Baltimore, delivering the news, telling impactful stories, and bringing communities together. But after decades in TV journalism, he’s embarked on a new chapter—one that focuses entirely on uplifting, inspiring, and meaningful storytelling.

In this episode of Conversations with Rich Bennett, Rich and co-host Robyn Burke sit down with Jamie to discuss his career, the transition from traditional broadcasting to digital media, and his mission with Costello Your Story—a platform dedicated to uncovering and sharing the good news that often goes untold.

The Power of Storytelling

Jamie’s journey into broadcasting wasn’t something he always envisioned. In fact, as a child, he was shy and afraid of public speaking. That all changed in fifth grade, when he was forced to give a speech—and received a standing ovation from his classmates. That moment sparked a lifelong passion for communication, leading him into radio, television, and ultimately, a career as a beloved news anchor.

Throughout his years at WMAR-TV, Jamie became known for his knack for human-interest stories—covering the people and moments that truly made an impact. While the news cycle often focuses on crime, politics, and controversy, Jamie made it his mission to highlight the positive.

Why Good News Matters

"Do we have enough good stories out there? Absolutely," Jamie says. "There are thousands of stories waiting to be told—people who don’t even realize their story is newsworthy until you start talking to them."

That’s exactly what Costello Your Story is all about. It’s a platform for storytelling that goes beyond headlines—showcasing everyday people making a difference.

One of the most memorable stories Jamie shares in this episode is about Marcus Moore, a young entrepreneur with autism who went from feeling isolated to launching his own pretzel business, Moore Crunch. His story is just one example of the countless inspirational journeys that deserve to be shared.

What’s Next for Jamie Costello?

Since retiring from TV news in 2024, Jamie has been busier than ever. Between producing new stories, coaching youth baseball, and emceeing events, he’s fully immersed in his new life as a storyteller, mentor, and entrepreneur.

When asked about his biggest lesson after nearly four decades in broadcasting, Jamie keeps it simple:
"The best story is still out there—it’s coming."
